熱帯医学では，発展途上国という地域，集団の健康と疾病の問題を扱うが，担当科目ではさらに広く公衆衛生学一般の基礎概念，政策，対策活動などを学ぶ。「健康転換」によって，途上国の中には，従来の感染症を克服できないまま，人口の老齢化を招き，心疾患，脳血管疾患，悪性腫瘍など非感染性疾患が混在している国が増えている。一方わが国では，感染症による死亡が減少し，非感染性疾患のうち心疾患，脳血管疾患，悪性腫瘍による死亡が６割にも及んでいる。わが国のこれまでの公衆衛生学的対策の経験とこれからの対策を教授し，途上国での活動に役立てる。
